Spotlight – Corey Marchetti
Hailing from Smithfield, RI, Corey Marchetti is a student pursuing a double major in Computer Science and German who recently made a trip out to Germany. While there, he attended classes as well as took part in an internship to develop the technical skills he developed while at URI.
From September to February, he took classes in music, grammar and even computer science – all taught in German. This immersion program brought him quickly up to speed in using his conversational skills in both a social and professional setting.
Afterwards, he worked for DB Schenker Rail Deutscheland AG where he focused his efforts on a database that kept track of personnel stats. He added functionality which included data visualizations and filters. Another project he worked on was a database that analyzed the frequency of processes performed on trains taken to a humpyard. “It was great to see in real-life how my work was being used.” In this project, he had to perform research in order to gather information about each process and he was able to interview various employees involved, making good use of his German skills.
Corey came into college with some computer programming experience in Visual Basic. He was leaning towards an engineering degree but found computer science to be a better fit. He combined the German and Computer Science into a 5-year program. “It’s rare to see Computer Science rather than engineering being paired with a language but it worked out.”
His experiences in his classes prepared him well for the internships he worked on this past year. “The classes gave a good coverage of what I might see in the real world. I also had help setting up the internship itself.” He points to CSC 340, Mathematical Foundations in Computer Science, to be one of the more challenging courses offered by the department but “surviving it was a boost.”
While he has done extensive work with data management, his other research interests lie in cognitive science. He is considering graduate school.
In the past, Corey worked with NUWC in Newport, RI focusing on VBA and Excel. This semester, he is building more of his database skills by taking CSC 436, Data Management Systems.
During his free time, Corey likes to play music and picks up just about any instrument he can get his hands on.
