Discoveries

Middle School Computer Science Discoveries (geared towards students entering 6 – 9th grade)

These camps will be using the same curriculum materials that every Middle School in Rhode Island will be adopting with the CS4RI initiative. They will make use of the materials developed by code.org and adapted for our students. Each week will be independent but we encourage you to experience all three in series.

Week 1 The Internet and Web

Learn to create a webpage and program it with HTML and CSS while also learning more about how the internet works. This week includes topics about internet privacy and examines the characteristics of good web pages. There will be an emphasis on iterative problem solving all week.

Week 2 Interactive Games and Animations

This week starts off programming simple shapes and moves to more complex sprite-based games. The fundamentals of programming, design, and debugging are taught as campers work towards a final project.

Week 3 The Internet of Things

This camp is all about programming hardware. Each camper will have a microcontroller board with LEDs and sensors and they will learn how software interacts with hardware as they create prototype physical computing devices. This week is hands-on fun.
