Summer 2010 Internships at American Power Conversion

Description 1:

The APC NMC firmware team is looking for interns to help develop and test our Network Management Card (NMC) product. The NMC enables a variety of
equipment (UPSs, Air Conditioners, Environmental Monitors, etc …) to be configured, controlled, and monitored via a network.

We are looking for students working toward a BS degree in CS, CE, EE, or a similar discipline.

Interns will be working side by side with the development/test staff toward the creation of a comprehensive automated test suite for the NMC. Additionally, we need help with a variety of support tools. We are looking for energetic, eager, team-oriented people who have the desire to learn and apply new skills.

Experience with scripting and scripting languages (Ruby, PHP, JavaScript, etc..) is a plus.

Our current development tasks also include touch-screen technology, USB development, Network Security issues and a variety of current network technologies (IPv6, IPSec). This is an open, flexible, and dynamic working environment. Interns will have the opportunity to learn and participate in these activities as their skills, interests, drive, and time allows.

Experience with C programming, embedded platforms (hardware and firmware), and networking concepts and protocols would open more opportunities for a potential candidate.

Description 2:

We are looking for currently enrolled students to help develop the monitoring and management products that fulfill this vision. Our InfraStruXure Central and Netbotz product lines help IT users monitor the physical environment to protect against environmental threats like temperature, humidity, and water, protect against physical threats by capturing video surveillance data and restricting access to sensitive areas within the data center, and manage thousands of infrastructure equipment by providing a software solution that ties everything together.

In your time here, you will be working side by side with the development staff working on our upcoming product releases using the latest and greatest technologies.

What you will be doing:

  • Fixing bugs in the latest versions of the product
  • Contributing to feature discussions
  • Creating tools to aid the development process
  • Developing small features
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education required: Currently enrolled as a full time student, working towards a B.S. in CS, CE, EE or similar degree.

Experience in the following subject matter is a plus: Programming in C, C++,C#, and/or Java; Networking concepts and protocols (e.g. TCP, UDP, SNMP, HTTP, Web Services, etc.); User interface development and design (Eclipse RCP, Swing, AJAX, GWT, etc.); Linux OS development. Preferred experience in working in small, highly interactive team; with excellent communications skills written and oral; and a passionate, open, straightforward and effective mindset.

Spotlight – Erica Hanson

Erica HansonA Coventry, RI resident, Erica Hanson is a fourth year BA in Computer Science finishing her degree this May along with a double minor in Italian and the Classics.

She has an extensive background in web design that she started early on. At 16, she had already earned a position at the Naval War College in Newport, RI, editing websites and later on training officers on how to update their own.

University Archives Offers Paid Internship Working with XML and Databases

University Archives and Library Special Collections is looking for a skilled intern to help us manage the way we access our digital holdings. We are looking for someone who is adept at tailoring style sheets and at encoding in XML.

Our finding aids are all in an XML subset called EAD (encoded archival description) and we are working on a step by step manual for encoding. We use a program called Notetab to input the data to XML and then render into HTML for viewing. This person would also help consolidate and refine databases and, in some instances, migrate them.

An intern dedicated to helping us create a manual and scheduling guide to develop good migrating and back up habits would also be of tremendous value. There would be opportunities for hire post internship as well.

The pay rate is $16/ hr.
